Exeter

Autumn Term

Teacher – Mr Connolly

A very warm welcome to the Exeter class page! We have made an excellent start the new school year. We shall be updating this page regularly to keep you informed on all of the exciting things which are going on in Exeter class!

English – We will be using The Power of Reading texts this term. We have started with Anthony Browne’s ‘Gorilla’. We shall also be writing a newspaper article based around our topic, Ancient Egypt.

Maths – Our focus is on number this term. We will be concentrating on place value, addition, subtraction multiplication and division. We will look at applying these skills into real life scenarios.

Science - This is taught once a week. We will be focusing on states if matter this term.

PE – Outdoor PE takes place on Mondays and Indoor PE takes place on Tuesdays.

PE Kit:

  • White T shirts (should be tucked in)
  • Black shorts (Black jogging bottoms for outside PE during Winter. Shorts/Dance leggings for gymnastics and dance)
  • Appropriate footwear for outside PE (trainers are recommended- Colour does not matter)
  • Hair tied back
  • Earrings should be removed

Please ensure your children have their PE kit in school for every lesson. On days the class has PE, you can send your children into school in their PE kit and they can then stay in their PE kit all day, if you so wish. Please ensure, they still have their school jumper, a white t-shirt, black tracksuit bottoms and black trainers (we only insist on black trainers if the children are not getting changed for PE in school).

MFL – Children will carry on learning French this year. We will be using Language Angels to support the children’s learning.

Eastbury Learning Quest – This term our topic is Ancient Egypt. We will be investigating how Ancient Egyptians lived their daily lives. We will analysis the lives of the pharaohs and explore why they were so important in society. We will be cooking like ancient Egyptians and creating artefacts from the past.

Homework and spellings – Spellings and timetables will be handed out every Friday and will be due the following Wednesday. We will be handing out project based homework tasks.

Library books and changing books – This will happen on a weekly basis. Children are also encouraged to bring in their own reading books.

Music – The children will be learning the trumpet this year. This will be taught by an outside agency.

The Daily Mile – Year 4 will do the daily mile between 08:45 and 09:00 every Friday.

Levelled Reading Books

The children are regularly assessed to judge their reading level. Once a week, the class will change their levelled PM book. However, as the children are getting older they’re reading more complex texts so we only want them to change their book if they have finished the book they currently have. Please ensure your child has their reading record with them in school every day. The children take responsibility to fill in their own reading record and we ask that you sign it each time you read with your children.
