Maths Department Information

Over recent years the GCSE Mathematics examination results have improved from a low of 26% to 66%, with around 15-20% achieving A or A* in GCSE Mathematics. Statistics GCSE results are consistently outstanding with over 85% achieving grades C or above. We became a Specialist Mathematics and Computing School in September 2006.

Our KS3 schemes of work have recently been rewritten to take into account functional mathematics and the new changes at KS3. The basic texts in years 7 to 9 are the Pearson KS3 Maths Progress books, and in years 10 and 11 the Oxford GCSE books, but all schemes of work are supplemented by a variety of worksheets and investigations. All classes are taught in ability based sets, Year 7 pupils are set after the first two weeks in September using KS2 raw data.

Pupils in year 11 are entered for Edexcel Mathematics Linear GCSE examination and there is an increasing number of students opting for GCSE Statistics. Sixth form courses are based on the Edexcel Modular A level, using Heinemann Modular Mathematics textbooks and Edexcel GCSE Mathematics for our re-sit groups. We offer AS and A2 level modules in Core Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Decision, Statistics and Mechanics.
