On Wednesday 17th October, 10 Politics and R.E. students attended a ‘Question Time’ style event at Westminster Abbey where they got to engage in current affairs with other sixth form schools from around London. There were 6 panellists including journalist and broadcaster Samira Ahmed, presenter and activist, Mehreen Baig, writer and broadcaster, Carolina Criado Perezl, Labour elected MP Valerie Vaz, Chaplain to the London School of Economics, James Walters and Democratic Society lead, Anthony Zacharzewski.
Students’ questions were asked and some students engaged in discussion with the panellists. Topics of discussion included ‘Brexit’, whether there should be another referendum, the place of direct democracy in the UK as well as feminism and recent actions of Members of Parliament. Harry Palmer was chosen to ask his question on a recent political scandal and showed confidence when he gave his own view point at the end of the panellists comments.
In addition, Stephanie Harrison engaged with the panellists in a discussion about the face of feminism. By the end of the day students were incredibly motivated and inspired to become more involved in politics – Fahad Mohammed and Aaliyah Forbes approached the Labour MP at the end of the event asking how to become more involved in politics in the local area. All in all, a great day was had by all!
