Global Young Leaders Conference

Cemil Alkis, Samiya Sayed, Kelly Wilson and Anthony Francis will be travelling to America on Sunday 17th July 2005 to represent Eastbury Sixth Form and the United Kingdom at the Global Young Leaders Conference.  Each of the four students was nominated by Miss J Rainey, Head of Sixth Form, for their outstanding academic achievement and passion for politics, human rights and above all their leadership potential.  This twelve day experience will be a once in a life time opportunity.

The GYLC is hosted by Washington and New York and therefore the students will spend time in both cities and will participate in high profile activities.

The activities in Washington will centre on World Diplomacy, peace and security.  While in New York each student will be preparing for the Global Summit.  During this time students will focus on the Global Economy and will work alongside United Nations.

Each student will meet some of President Bush's Senate and will have the opportunity to address Congress.

This unique programme of study provides an enriched curriculum at the highest level.

The whole Sixth Form is very proud of Kelly, Cemil, Samiya and Anthony and wish them well on their journey.

My nomination for the Global Young Leaders conference in Washington DC and New York City came through Miss Jo Rainey, Head of Sixth Form, as an outstanding educator within the UK could send four students who excelled both academically and possessed strong leadership potential. I was so honoured and filled with a wealth of pride when I heard that I had been nominated for such an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The 2005 Global Young leaders’ conference will be spread out over twelve days consisting of a number of activities, which aim to expand our cultural awareness as we interact with students from over 100 countries worldwide. The GYLC will be hosted in two American cities: Washington DC and New York City. My journey will begin in Washington DC with events including, visits to the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial and the Korean War Veteran Memorial. The events in Washington DC will centre their efforts on World Diplomacy, Independency (which will include a number conferences on Global economy and a chance to participate in a Peace and security: conflict resolution simulation) and also bring nations together in a form of “leadership group meetings” to create a ‘Global village’

Within the GYLC my eyes will also be opened to Human rights, nationally and globally and international law. In a rapidly changing global atmosphere we will learn about the roots of U.S Democracy with a Tour of the historic district of Philadelphia, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon lunch. This is where I would now begin to prepare for a Global Summit over the following four days.

The next leg of the Journey will bring me to New York City. Concentration will be on Global Economy and the role of the United Nations (UN) as New York is homed to the UN Headquarters. There will also be the chance to develop my public speaking and speech writing, in conjunction with coalition building. During day ten, we will have the choice of five New York site visits including: Central Park Walking Tour, NBC Studios, and The Federal Reserve Bank of New York, United Nations Private Tour or a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of art. This will also be initiated by being greeted by the United Nations and keynote speakers. Day ten will also bring a friendly and relaxing atmosphere with an ‘Ice cream social’. We would then be in the process of finalizing the global summit for day eleven, and participating in a National delegation rally.

One of our biggest days will then follow on day eleven with the commencement of the Global Summit simulation. The events will then be debriefed. To end what seems to be a breathtaking experience of leadership enrichment at its highest level, there will be a formal chance to let our hair down so to speak, with a farewell dinner cruise overlooking the statue of Liberty.

All of the activities that have been explained above that I have been nominated to attend would not have been possible if it was not for the funding of the School. The total cost for the GYLC is $3,500 (1,911 Pounds) excluding flight costs, Shuttle fee to venues within America and lunches during the trip. An agreement was made between the school and me that a little more than half the total amount would be paid by the school and I will have to pay the rest. I can only describe it as a huge investment on my future.

I plan to use all that I may gain from the Global Young Leaders Conference to develop some very important skills in order to achieve my personal goals. The GYLC will give me such a deep insight into the way global politics operates that I can be open minded on issues and build upon valuable knowledge.
